Adolescent health
Dr. Lewen loves seeing young patients, many of whom may have never seen a gynecologist before. Dispelling the myth of the speculum exam, and having a patient look up and say, "that wasn't bad!" is what makes Dr. Lewen's day. Helping adolescents with difficult menses, with questions regarding their development, questions about contraception, with preparing for the health, and social issues they will face at college--giving general guidance during these complicated years is something she does with the utmost care.

Menopausal health
Menopause is a topic that has become a complex one in the past couple of decades. Women's interest in feeling well through these years is luckily something they are demanding at this time. There is new data constantly arriving into the gynecologic literature (and lay press!). Dr. Lewen feels it is her job to understand this data thoroughly and present what is pertinent to each of her patients in a clear and individualized fashion.

Osteoporosis
Our office has a brand new Hologics P Discovery bone densitometry machine. Bone density measurements and evaluations can be done at the time of a patient's appointment or when it is convenient for her. The need for treatment-may it be diet and exercise or pharmaceuticals-will be tailored to these results given the most up-to-date information and the patient's desires.

Annual pap and pelvic exams
From the age of 18 years and forever after, Dr. Lewen recommends an annual exam. Most years, a pap smear will also be recommended. At this visit, a comprehensive review of general health, menses, and contraceptive needs, and any other special issues a patient may have, will be reviewed. Recommendations and referrals for blood work, mammograms, colon cancer screening, osteoporosis screening, vaccination and physician referrals will be made on an individualized basis.

Breast health
Dr. Lewen recommends a mammogram yearly after age 40 or whenever a patient or she feels anything unusual in the breast. If there is a family history of breast cancer or a breast complaint, mammograms or MRI of the breast, may be recommended earlier or more often. Self-breast exam is taught to all patients beginning at age 20.

Gardasil
Patients may receive the HPV vaccine series in our office.

Contraceptive counseling
There are many options for contraception in our world today! Dr. Lewen can help explain this range of options which include birth control pills, patch or ring, the new IUD's, condom use, permanent sterilization. The risks and benefits of these will be discussed in detail as well as a review of safe-sex precautions now being recommended.

Ultrasound services
Our office provides 3D gynecologic services on site.

Cholesterol screening
Our office provides on site cholesterol screening from a finger-stick. Results are extremely accurate and can be reviewed that day or at an appointment following. If you are interested in having screening performed, we recommend that you do not eat after midnight the night before. No matter what time or day your appointment is, you are welcome to come in first thing in the morning to have your blood work done before you get too hungry!

Neuromuscular massage
Available fall 2008.

preconception counseling
Prior to achieving pregnancy, it is ideal for a woman to review many issues with her physician. Being certain there are not medical issues that require special care prior or during pregnancy, reviewing her exercise regimen, being certain she has begun prenatal vitamins, reviewing family history and menstral history. Dr. Lewen is available to help with these issues and refer to an obstetrician who would be a good fit for the individual patient.
